Things to Do on Your Next Trip (or Staycation) That Aren't on Every List

October 18, 2026 · 7 min read

Every "top things to do" list for a city starts to look the same after a while. Same museum, same viewpoint, same restaurant that's now booked three weeks out. Those can be great. But if you want a trip that feels like yours, or you're staying home and want your own town to feel new again, it helps to have a few ideas that work anywhere.

These come straight from the kinds of missions we put on our cards. None of them need a reservation.

1Read the street names.Pick a few streets near where you're staying and look up who or what they're named after. You end up with a weird little history lesson, and you won't walk those streets the same way again. Works just as well in your own neighborhood.
2Shop a grocery store like a local.Skip the souvenir shop and walk every aisle of a regular grocery store. Check out the snacks, the coffee, whatever's on sale. Buy one thing you've never seen before and try it that night.
3Go find the clock tower.Or the oldest building, if there's no clock. Most towns have one. See how old it is, check whether the clock's even right. It's a goofy mission, but it pulls you into parts of town you'd usually skip.
4Hunt for a hidden garden.Courtyards, church gardens, a rooftop someone mentioned. Ask a local where they go when they want some quiet. Even at home there's probably a green spot you've driven past a hundred times.
5Ask someone what they do on a day off.A barista, the person at the front desk, your neighbor. Don't ask what tourists should see. Ask what they'd do with a free Saturday. That's where the good stuff is.
You don't need a plane ticket to feel like you went somewhere.

The staycation version

Not going anywhere this month? Take a Saturday, pretend you just landed in your own city, and do two of the five above. Get coffee somewhere new. Walk a street you only ever drive down. It sounds a little silly until you actually do it.

Each of these lines up with one of the envelopes in The 5 Envelope Method™: Culture, Connection, Curiosity, Delight and Care. Drawing one card from each is a quick way to end up with a day that has a bit of everything, without spending your whole evening on travel blogs.
